Speaking on the Backstage with Boria show, the Indian all-rounder said he came to the India team as a raw material and MS Dhoni prepared him and wanted him to learn from his mistakes.

“I learned a lot from everyone and especially from Mahi bhai because when I went there (Indian team), I was a raw material. The way he cared for me, the way he gave me a lot of freedom. He wanted me to learn from my own mistakes,” Pandya told Boria Majumdar on his show Backstage with Boria.

“When I got there, I was like ‘Mahendra Singh Dhoni will take care of everything.’ At that time I thought why he doesn’t say a lot of things. I thought he would tell me to play here or there. Later I realized that he wanted me to learn by myself so I can survive more,” the all-rounder added.

Recalling his T20I debut against Australia in Adelaide, Hardik Pandya said he gave up plenty of points in his first run and believed he was playing the first and last game of his career. The 28-year-old added that Dhoni gave him second place and then things changed.

“I remember giving up 22 or 24 points (19) on my first debut on (T20I) and I honestly thought that was my first and last game. So when he asked me to play the second one, I thought he was referring to someone else. Then I went and obviously things changed. So what I learned from him was that he never showed he was there but he was always there.

Notably, Hardik who took 2 wickets on his T20I debut was part of the winning team as India won the game by 37 runs against Australia.
