Should the Browns trade for Jimmy Garoppolo?

With the NFL poised to appeal Deshaun Watson’s six-game suspension, speculation continues over who the Cleveland Browns quarterback will play this fall.

Right now, it looks like veteran Jacoby Brissett will line up behind center if Watson’s suspension is extended.

But analysts and journalists have recently added another name to the mix.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly on the table for Cleveland.

Garoppolo started for the 49ers last year, leading the team to a 10-7 record as well as an NFC championship before losing to the Rams.

Despite his past success, the 49ers are now switching to their young quarterback, Trey Lance, leaving Garoppolo as an option for other teams.

Even with the Browns acquiring Josh Rosen and Jacoby Brissett this offseason, there are a few reasons they could acquire Garoppolo as well.

The Browns can afford it

With the Browns’ current available space of $48.7 million, they wouldn’t have much trouble acquiring Garoppolo and his $27 million contract.

The team wouldn’t have to do much more than find a trade with the 49ers.

It has been reported that the 49ers are eager to get him off the books and may even release him before the start of the season.

It’s good for the Browns and may even help the team not give up too much for Garoppolo.

He recovered from an operation

Earlier this spring, Garoppolo underwent surgery for a torn capsule in his throwing arm.

Months later, he’s now in training camp kicking the ball around and looks ready for the NFL.

And even with his past injury, he proved he could stay healthy by playing almost an entire season last year.

He is better than Brisset

Brissett is often said to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

And while some argue Garoppolo should be a substitute rather than a starter, he’s still considerably better than Brissett.

At least their records say so.

As starters, Brissett is 14-23 while Garoppolo is 33-14 as well as 5-2 in the playoffs.

Garoppolo is proving he can not only win more regular season games, but also make the playoffs.

Although Brisset has proven himself to be successful in the regular season, there is no promise that he could lead the Browns to the playoffs let alone a playoff run.

He has an image the Browns need

With all the PR issues the Browns faced after trading for Deshaun Watson, putting a guy like Garoppolo at the front of the franchise would be a welcome change of pace.

He is handsome, trouble-free and kind, everyone would like to bring their mother home.

He’s unproblematic, has no legal issues, and has a good image around the NFL — the kind of image the Browns could use right now.

The team would obviously prefer to start Watson given his elite abilities.

But if he’s suspended for most or an entire season, it could be a smart move for the Browns to acquire a guy like Jimmy Garoppolo.
