Tesla battery supplier CATL’s Sichuan factory is the industry’s first zero-carbon facility

Sichuan Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited, or CATL-SC, a wholly owned subsidiary of CATL, had its facilities certified as the first zero-carbon factory in the new energy industry late last week. The factory received PAS 2060 carbon neutral certification earlier this month.

CATL, a battery supplier for Tesla and other electric vehicle makers, has been working with the Austin-based electric vehicle leader since late 2019, with the partnership officially announced in the second quarter of 2020.

The factory has been certified by SGS, the world leader in testing, inspection and certification. For years, CATL-SC has worked to reduce carbon emissions and make its supply chain, from production to product implementation, as sustainable as possible. The facility uses an intelligent plant management system, enabling data interconnection through automatic capture of plant system data and equipment operating data, the company said in a statement. Press.

The systematic facility management platform helps realize the safe, reliable, high-efficiency and low-carbon operation of the plant. Groups of high-energy equipment even have an optimization algorithm, which calculates the operating parameters of each sub-equipment with the lowest total energy consumption in the system.

CATL-SC general manager Zhu Yunfeng said the plant began working towards zero carbon emissions when it began construction. The factory used innovation and other strategies to produce high quality components and products with fewer raw materials.

As part of the plant operation, CATL-SC used improved logistics equipment and other sustainable plant transportation methods to reduce emissions. These include driverless logistics vehicles and electric forklifts, which enable carbon-free operation between supplier factories, raw material warehouses, processing factories, finished goods warehouses and customer factories, added CATL. The company also encourages workers to use electric vehicles or shared mobility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in all aspects of life and production.

The location of the facility also contributes to its ability to be carbon neutral. Three rivers, the Jinsha River, Minjiang River, and the Yangtze River, flow through the city of Yibin, where the factory is located, to create an ideal natural environment with abundant water resources. This enables the plant to reduce 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. More than 80% of the plant’s energy consumption comes from hydroelectricity.

“The certification marks an important step for CATL towards its carbon neutral goals,” CATL said in a statement. “As the world’s first zero-carbon battery factory, the CATL factory in Sichuan sets an example of how battery production can be carbon-neutral and also offers a completely new solution with electrification + zero-carbon on the Marlet. »

CATL plans to build a new $5 billion battery factory in North America.
