ALPENA – A faulty power supply caused a power outage affecting more than 5,600 homes and businesses in Alpena and Près Isle counties Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after 2 p.m., an outage on an incoming power supply from Alpena Power Co.’s electricity supplier caused a circuit breaker to open on Alpena’s distribution system, leading to widespread outage, the company said. .

The company is investigating the cause of the circuit breaker failure and action, she said.

Customers from downtown Alpena to the Grand Lake area, including those east of US-23 to Lake Huron and west of US-23 to Long Lake , lost power for about 70 minutes, according to the power company.

The outage affected Besser and Hinks Elementary Schools, but classes at those schools remained open, according to a spokesperson for Alpena Public Schools.
